How to choose the right adapter for your device or gadget?

We have many adapters available, but different gadgets require different adapters. By following the guide below, you can send us as much detail as possible so we can recommend the right adapter for you.

Most adapters are AC-DC switching adapters, which converts the regular 240V power supply in NZ to a DC supply, common in many smaller electrical gadgets.

To find the right adapter, you need to know a few key things

  1. The required voltage (eg. 5V, 9V, 12V, 15V....)
  2. The required power / current (eg. mA, A, amps or watts)
  3. The polarity of the connector (eg. center positive, center negative)
  4. The plug connection (eg. 2mm, 3.5mm, 5.5mm...)

So the first thing to do is to check your current adapter or look on the gadget for the following.

1. The required voltage & 2. The required power / current

This is typically found printed on the device and/or on the adapter itself. It will look something like the example below. You would be looking for "V" and "A" numbers in most cases.

As an example, the output voltage on the adapter below is 8.4V and the power / current is 1.7A.

We will need to know both of these.

Also - 1.7A is the same as 1700mA. You may also see a number with W - this is watts and we can use this to work out which adapter.

Eg. 12V 24W is also fine for us to find the right adapter.

Next is the 3. The polarity of the connector

Most devices will have a circular plug connector like this.

And gadgets and power adapters usually show the polarity by including an image like one of these:

The most common is center positive (+) connectors like this.

Positive center

There is also the less popular center negative (-) connector like this.

Negative Center

We must supply the correct polarity so if you see this, please let us know. If this is now shown, then it is likely a center positive.

Finally - we need to know 4. The plug connection (eg. 2mm, 3.5mm, 5.5mm...)

There are many sizes of plugs and this can be tricky to work out. The most common are below and the easiest way to tell what you have is by measuring the current plug end size or the hole on the gadget.

This is done by measuring the outer diameter and the inner diameter.

Here are some of the most common connections:

If you cant measure the connector itself, you can also measure the outer diameter on the product itself.

Once you have this information, or as much as possible, let us know and we will recommend the right adapter for you.
