Battery Size & Equivalents Guide: CR2032, LR44 & More
The quick-reference battery guide
Remote won't work? Key fob dead? Kitchen scale blank? The answer is usually a coin or button cell — and the codes on them are more logical than they look. Bookmark this page for the next time you need to decode one.
How coin cell codes work
Lithium coin cells follow a simple pattern. Take CR2032:

C = lithium chemistry (3 volts)

R = round

20 = 20 mm diameter

32 = 3.2 mm thick
So a CR2025 is the same 20 mm diameter but 2.5 mm thick, and a CR2016 is 1.6 mm thick. They're all 3V — but they are not interchangeable: the wrong thickness won't make proper contact (or won't fit), and thinner cells have less capacity.

Watch batteries: silver-oxide equivalents
Silver-oxide vs alkaline: a silver-oxide SR cell is the same size as its LR twin but holds a steadier 1.55V for longer — preferred for watches and precision instruments. Alkaline (LR) versions are cheaper and fine for toys and pointers. Common watch codes:

Battery tips

Match the exact code. Diameter and thickness both matter — "close enough" usually isn't.

Check the + side orientation when inserting coin cells; most sit positive-side-up but not all.

Don't mix old and new batteries in the same device — the weakest cell drains first and can leak.

Storage: keep batteries cool and dry; lithium coin cells hold charge for up to 10 years.

Recycle: many NZ retailers and transfer stations accept household batteries — don't bin lithium cells.
⚠️ Button battery safety
Coin and button batteries are dangerous if swallowed, especially for young children — a lodged battery can cause serious internal burns within hours. Keep spares locked away, secure battery compartments (many remotes have screws for this reason), and if you suspect a child has swallowed one, call 111 or the NZ National Poisons Centre (0800 764 766) immediately.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a CR2032 instead of a CR2025?
Sometimes it will physically squeeze in, but it's 0.7 mm thicker — it can strain the holder or fail to seat properly. Use the size your device specifies.
What battery does my LED strip remote take?
Most credit-card style LED remotes take a CR2025; larger RF remotes often take AAA cells or a CR2032. The battery drawer is usually marked — and our LED controllers & remotes pages list battery types where applicable.
Why did my new battery die quickly?
Common causes: an old battery left in the multipack losing charge over years (check expiry dates), a device that doesn't fully power off, or an alkaline cell used where silver-oxide is recommended.
