What is NFC?
NFC (Near Field Communication) is a short-range wireless technology that lets two devices exchange small amounts of data when they're brought within a few centimetres of each other. It's the same technology behind contactless payments, and every modern smartphone — iPhone and Android — has an NFC reader built in.
An NFC tag is a tiny chip with an antenna, usually embedded in a sticker, card or key fob. Tags are passive: they have no battery and are powered by the phone or reader that scans them, which is why they last for years and cost very little.
What's the difference between NFC and RFID?
NFC is actually a subset of RFID (Radio Frequency Identification). The practical differences:

How to program an NFC tag with your phone
- Download a free app such as NFC Tools (iPhone or Android).
- Choose what to write: a URL, contact card, WiFi credentials, plain text and more.
- Tap Write and hold the tag against the back of your phone (top edge on iPhones).
- Done — test it by tapping the tag. To trigger phone automations instead, use iPhone Shortcuts (Automation → NFC) or an Android automation app.
Tip: don't stick standard NFC tags directly onto metal surfaces — the metal interferes with the antenna. Use on-metal tags or add a spacer. And if you'd rather skip the setup entirely, our pre-programming service can deliver tags ready to use.
Frequently asked questions
Do NFC tags need batteries?
No. Tags are passive and are powered by the phone or reader scanning them. They last for many years.
Can iPhones read NFC tags?
Yes — iPhone 7 and later read NFC tags, and newer iPhones scan automatically when the screen is on. Writing tags requires a free app.
How far away can NFC be read?
About 1–4 cm. This short range is a feature: it makes accidental or malicious scanning very difficult.
Are NFC tags secure?
Tags can be locked so their content can't be overwritten. For payments-grade security, dedicated secure elements are used — everyday tags are best for links, automation and info sharing rather than storing sensitive data.
What RFID frequency do I need for access control?
Check your existing reader or cards: 125 kHz (often labelled EM4100/TK4100) and 13.56 MHz (MIFARE) systems are both common in NZ. The two aren't interchangeable.
