EV charging in New Zealand, explained simply
Whether you've just bought your first EV or you're trying to work out why your Japanese-import Leaf won't plug into the charger at the mall, this guide covers how EV charging works in New Zealand — the plug types, the charging speeds, and what gear you actually need.
The four plug types you'll meet in NZ
Type 2 (Mennekes) — the NZ standard for AC charging
Type 2 is the official standard connector for AC charging in New Zealand and is fitted to virtually all NZ-new EVs, including Teslas, Hyundai, Kia, MG, BYD and European models. It's round with one flattened side. Public AC chargers and home wallboxes in NZ use Type 2 sockets or tethered Type 2 cables.
Type 1 (J1772) — common on Japanese imports
Many used EVs imported from Japan — most notably the Nissan Leaf and older Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV — have a Type 1 AC socket instead. Type 1 is fully round with a clip on top. It charges at the same rate for these cars, but it means the car can't plug directly into many NZ public AC chargers or Type 2 cables without an adapter (see below).
CCS2 — DC fast charging standard
CCS2 (Combined Charging System) is the Type 2 socket with two extra DC pins below it. It's the standard for DC fast charging on NZ-new EVs and is what you'll find on the majority of new fast chargers being installed across the country.
CHAdeMO — DC fast charging for Japanese imports
CHAdeMO is the large round DC fast-charge connector used by Japanese-market cars like the Nissan Leaf. Most established NZ fast-charging sites still carry a CHAdeMO cable alongside CCS2, but newer sites increasingly prioritise CCS2 — worth knowing if you drive a Leaf and are planning a road trip.

*Most EVs have an onboard AC charger limited to 7–11 kW, so a 22 kW wallbox won't necessarily charge faster — check your car's AC charging limit.
Charging a Japanese import in NZ: adapters
If your car has a Type 1 socket (e.g. Japanese-import Nissan Leaf), a Type 2 to Type 1 adapter lets you plug into NZ public AC chargers and Type 2 charging cables.
Going the other way, if your car has a Type 2 socket but you have access to older Type 1 charging equipment, a Type 1 to Type 2 adapter solves that. Both are 32 A rated and available with fast NZ courier from our EV Accessories collection.
Important: adapters work for AC charging only. There is no safe passive adapter between CHAdeMO and CCS2 — DC fast charging must use the connector your car was built with.
Home charging tips

Trickle charging works fine for many drivers. If you drive under 50 km a day, an overnight charge from a standard socket often covers it. Use a dedicated socket in good condition, never a multibox or household extension lead.

Get the cable off the ground. A wall-mounted charger holder keeps your Type 2 plug clean, dry and away from being driven over.

Think about timing. Many NZ power plans offer cheap or free off-peak periods — schedule charging in your car or charger app to take advantage.

Public charging in NZ
New Zealand's public network is growing quickly, with fast chargers at fuel stations, supermarkets and along all main highways. Most networks operate via an app or RFID fob, and pricing is typically per kWh, sometimes with a per-minute component to discourage overstaying. On road trips, plan a buffer: check a charging map app before you leave, note backup chargers, and remember that CHAdeMO availability is thinning at the newest sites.
Frequently asked questions
Can I charge a Japanese-import Leaf at NZ public chargers?
Yes. For DC fast charging, use the CHAdeMO cable found at most established fast-charge sites. For AC chargers (destination charging), you'll need a Type 2 to Type 1 adapter.
Is it safe to charge from a normal power point?
Yes, provided the socket and wiring are in good condition and you use the supplied EVSE cable at its default (usually 8 A) setting. Avoid extension leads and multiboxes, and have an electrician check older wiring.
What's the difference between Type 2 and CCS2?
CCS2 is Type 2 plus two extra high-power DC pins. A car with a CCS2 inlet accepts both a Type 2 AC plug (top portion) and a CCS2 DC plug (whole socket).
Do EV adapters affect charging speed?
A good quality 32 A adapter doesn't slow AC charging — the car and charger negotiate the rate as normal, up to the adapter's 32 A rating.
