LED Strip Power Supplies & Installation: How to Get It Right
Powering LED strips properly — the guide most people wish they'd read first
The number one cause of LED strip problems isn't the strip — it's the power supply. Undersized adapters cause dim ends, flickering and early failure. This guide walks you through sizing a power supply, choosing between 12V and 24V, dealing with voltage drop, and picking the right controller and channel. (New to LED strips entirely? Step 1: Calculate your wattage
The formula is simple:
Watts per metre × length of strip × 1.2 (headroom) = minimum power supply wattage
Every strip has a watts-per-metre rating on its product page. The 1.2 multiplier gives you 20% headroom, which keeps the power supply running cool and extends the life of both the supply and the strip.
Example: 4 metres of strip rated at 14.4 W/m → 4 × 14.4 = 57.6 W → × 1.2 = 69 W minimum. Choose a 72 W (or larger) supply.

Step 2: Match the voltage — 12V vs 24V

Voltage must match exactly. A 12V strip on a 24V supply will burn out; a 24V strip on 12V simply won't light properly. See 12V adapters & transformers or the full power supply range.
Step 3: Beat voltage drop
LED strips lose voltage along their length — if one end of a long run looks dimmer or more yellow, that's voltage drop. Rules of thumb:
- Keep single 12V runs to about 5 metres from the power feed.
- For longer runs, inject power at both ends or every ~5 m using extra feed wires from the same supply.
- Use decent gauge wire for feeds — thin bell wire over a long distance makes drop worse.
- Or step up to 24V strip, which roughly doubles the practical run length.

Remember the power supply and connections need protection too — keep supplies in dry, ventilated spots and use sealed junctions outdoors.
Step 5: Controllers and dimming

Single colour strips need a simple inline dimmer (or none at all).

RGB strips use a 4-pin controller; RGBW uses 5-pin — they're not interchangeable.

IR remotes need line of sight; RF remotes work through cabinets and walls.

Addressable/dream-colour strips (WS2812B, SK6812) need a pixel controller such as the SP108E WiFi pixel controller.
Step 6: Mounting — why aluminium channel is worth it
Aluminium channel (extrusion) does three jobs: it acts as a heatsink so LEDs run cooler and last longer, the diffuser eliminates visible LED dots for a clean line of light, and it gives a straight, professional mounting surface. Installation quick tips
- Only cut strip on the marked cut lines (scissor icons).
- Clean surfaces with isopropyl alcohol before sticking — the 3M adhesive needs a clean, dry, smooth surface.
- Solderless clip connectors make corners and gaps easy; check pin count matches your strip.
- Test everything laid out on the floor before final mounting.
- Mains wiring in NZ is restricted work — plug-in supplies are DIY-friendly, but anything hard-wired needs a registered electrician.
Frequently asked questions
Can I run two strips off one power supply?
Yes, if the supply's wattage covers the total of both strips (plus 20% headroom). Wire them in parallel back to the supply rather than daisy-chaining beyond ~5 m.
Why is the far end of my strip dim?
Voltage drop. Inject power at the far end, upgrade feed wire gauge, or use 24V strip for long runs.
Can I reuse an old laptop or router power supply?
Not recommended unless voltage matches exactly and the wattage is sufficient — and connector polarity must match. A purpose-made 12V DC adapter is inexpensive insurance.
