Ordinary candle wicks are generally made of cotton thread, which continuously provides liquid paraffin and paraffin vapor when the candle burns.

The product of incomplete combustion of paraffin wax, carbon black, is attached to the top of the candle wick. The charcoal part of the candle wick can still transmit liquid paraffin, but it is slower than cotton fibers. In this way, the effective burning area of the candle wick is reduced, the efficiency of sucking up liquid paraffin is reduced, the flame becomes darker, and black smoke is easily produced.

After clipping the gradually darkened and hardened part of the top of the candle, the flame is brighter and more stable. This is because the carbonized part of the candle wick is cut off, and the carbonized part is reduced, which expands the effective area of combustion and improves the transmission efficiency of liquid paraffin, so that more paraffin is melted by radiation, which makes adsorption and transmission easier.
